A study done by three German psychologists would let their money ride on the Chinese teams to win the most medals if their re
search is correct. These three researchers found that referees in sports have a distinct bias for atheletes in red uniforms.
The three researchers Norbert Hagemann, Bernd Strauss and Jan Leibing of the University of Munster used Taekwondo matches to conclude their research. They found evidence that red uniforms have an affect on the split-second decisions a referee must be called to make, thus leading to a bias in scoring.
Their expirement consisted of watching two competitors in a Taekwondo match one with a blue uniform and the other with a red uniform.
They had the referees assign points to 42 different matches.
The the group shoed the referees a second set of matches which were the exact same matches but with the color of the athletes uniforms digitally reversed.
What they concluded was that the competitors in the red martial arts uniforms earned an average of 13% more then when they were in the blue, and remember ever athlete in the 42 matches appeared in bot the red and blue uniforms.
“What’s more, points awarded seemed to increase after the blue athlete was digitally transformed into a red uniformed athlete and decreased when the red competitor changed to a blue uniform,” said the researchers. “Referees decisions will ‘tip the scales’ when athletes are relatively well-matched but have relatively small influence when one is clearly superior,” they concluded.
The three researcher said that further research is needed to test other colors used in sports. They also suggested that this further the need for electronic decision making systems to avoid these human biases.
