Origins of Karate
Karate is a martial art developed on the Ryukyu Islands in what is currently Okinawa, Japan. It was created through indigenous fighting methods called te (literally: “hand”?) and Chinese kenp?. Karate is very much a striking sport like boxing which uses punching, kicking, knee and elbow strikes, and open-handed techniques such as knife-hands (karate chop). Karate is also a style in grappling, locks, restraints, throws, and vital point strikes are taught in some styles. Some karate practitioners call it karateka.
