Potential Fights after UFC 123

Posted on 21 November 2010 by Raphael Garcia

With UFC 123 behind us, mixed martial arts fans are already discussing some of the fights they would love to see. With the reemergence of Quinton Jackson and BJ Penn fans of these stars may have a lot to look forward to in 2011. Before the evening was even over two big matches for the February card in Australia were already announced. Denis Siver, who is coming off an impressive defeat of Andre Winner, will face off with George Sotriopoulos. Along with this fight, BJ Penn will face the perennial welterweight contender, Jon Fitch. Many of the winners and losers alike from UFC 123 have a number of fight options awaiting them in the upcoming year.

Quinton Jackson versus the winner of Jon Jones versus Ryan Bader
It has recently been announced that two of the UFC’s best young prospects will face off against each other in 2011. Ryan Bader and Jon Jones have both tore through their early opponents and created undefeated win streaks. Instead of challenging a solidified name in the UFC, matchmakers have placed these two fighters against each other. A fight against Jackson would be a strong test for either winner. As a former champion, Rampage has the knockout power and offensive takedown abilities to threaten either Jones or Bader. Along with the possibility of an exciting battle, this can help unclog the light heavyweight rankings.

Tearing Down the Cage: UFC 123

Posted on 21 November 2010 by Raphael Garcia

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returned to Detroit, Michigan on November 20th, and brought some exciting finishes and controversial decisions. The main event of the night saw Quinton “Rampage” Jackson win via split decision over Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida. To go along with this, BJ Penn, who’s almost a lock for the UFC’s Hall of Fame, needed just 21 seconds to blow away Hall of Famer Matt Hughes with a stunning right hook. The end of the event set the stage for some interesting matchups that will take place in 2011.

While acting surprised that he had won the event, “Rampage” Jackson offered up the idea of a rematch between himself and Machida. Machida also stated that he would like the idea of a rematch if that is what the UFC presented. While no response has been made, and Rashad Evans not getting his shot against Light Heavyweight Champion Mauricio Rua until March, this could be a possible great draw for another UFC event. However, many other contenders in the division are also available who could pose as interesting opponents for each of these competitors.

Things to Watch for from UFC 123

Posted on 18 November 2010 by Raphael Garcia

On November 20, the Ultimate Fighting Championship will move into the Palace of Auburn Hills in Detroit, Michigan. The main event of the evening features two former UFC Light Heavyweight champions trying to start a comeback surge towards the title. Lyoto Machida will face off against Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. With both fighters coming off of losses, this fight is important for both as neither man wants to end their year with another loss. Along with this main event, a number of other interesting points are waiting to develop during this Pay per View card.

1. A Fight of Styles
Many times the UFC has touted the slogan “Styles Make Fights” and that is very true for the fight between “The Dragon” and “Rampage” Machida is known as a patient counter puncher who may not always create the most exciting fights, but lands effective blows that can render his opponent’s attacks pointless. On the other hand, Jackson made his legacy off of the violent knockouts created by his vicious striking. This fight may prove to be very dangerous for that style because Rampage often uses counter punches to drop opponents like he did Wanderlei Silva and Chuck Liddell, but Machida’s Karate skills are just as potent, if not more so. We say this when he picked apart Rashad Evans to win the title in 2009. Rampage has promised to press the action and force Machida to fight his style of fight, but that can quickly prove to be Jackson’s undoing.

Exercise Tip of the Week 11.16.10

Posted on 16 November 2010 by Raphael Garcia

Explosive strength is a vital trait for any mixed martial arts fighter. The ability to suddenly attack or move your opponent can change the complexion of the battle. Plyometric strength training is one way to help develop your explosive power.

This training method involves a number of quick movements and lifting motions. These motions impact a number of different muscles that help build your strength, agility and speed. Each of these attributes can help a fighter gain the upper hand over his opponent. Plyometric exercises should be practiced with the mentality that every single motion during the exercise must be done to completion to gain the most from the workout.

Many different types of plyometric exercises are available to add to your workout. For example, if you are trying to develop your leg strength for kicking, you can use box jumps which develop the major muscle groups in your lower body. The power clean is an example of an exercise that works your entire body; developing strength and stamina.

Wrestling’s Place in Mixed Martial Arts

Posted on 15 November 2010 by Raphael Garcia

Mixed martial arts is supposed to be just that, the blending of various martial arts into one “complete” martial artist. Today’s MMA athlete may employ a number of fighting styles from boxing to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to Capoeira into their skill set. However, what happens when one style has been given the negative connotation of “lay and pray?” Recently, discussions about how some fighters are using wrestling to control their opponents instead of finish them has caused a controversy within the MMA world. How will the sport handle this revolution or are we going to see a drastic change to how the sport is contested.

Highly trained wrestlers come into MMA with the ability to control where the fight takes place.
The ability to take an opponent from his feet to his back or less desirable position is an important skill to acquire. Wrestlers that have been a part of the sport since high school understand the weight cutting process and have been shaving weight to lower divisions for years. These are just a few of the attributes that help wrestlers make a transition from their sport into mixed martial arts.

What Gear Do I Need Start MMA Training?

Posted on 15 November 2010 by Tony Thacker

The mma gear needed to take part in MMA is pretty basic. Firstly, you will want to purchase a decent pair of boardshorts made specifically by a company known for fight apparel. Do not purchase similar looking surfer wear because it won’t be as durable. And, while many fighters will train in traditional cotton T-shirts, it might be best to spend the extra money on a lycra training shirt that will withstand all manner of tough training.
