Cardiovascular endurance is an important part of any fighter’s preparation before competing. It’s important that you have the ability to fight the full length of the battle without losing too much energy and strength. Doing so will place you at a dangerous disadvantage if your opponent is better prepared. Interval training is one way to improve your stamina for competition.

The Expansion of Mixed Martial Arts

When it comes to the mainstream sports world, mixed martial arts is still in its infant stage of growth. It’s easy to look back a few years ago to see that major sports outlets such as ESPN did not cover the events or big names such as Brock Lesnar or Chuck Liddell. Today, major cable companies carry not only events from the UFC, but Strikeforce, Bellator, and even smaller promotions. As we approach the end of 2010 one can only wonder what’s to come for MMA and its fans. As the sport continues to evolve, here are a few ideas as to what lies next for the fledging competition.

Technique of the Week – The Jab

In this week’s edition of Technique of the Week, I’m going to look at the corner stone of a professional boxer’s arsenal: the jab. In my opinion the lead jab is the most important punch in professional fighting. When used correctly, you can use the punch to gain ground on your opposition while keeping them in a constant state of defense. The jab can also be used to disrupt an attacking opponent, throwing them off their game.

Are Leg Locks too Dangerous for Mixed Martial Arts?

Around the sporting world, professional organizations are making moves to make their sport safer. For example, the National Football League is taking up a crusade to eliminate helmet to helmet hits that cause severe concussions and can ruin an individual’s career and life after the game. This past summer a similar movement was mentioned within the Mixed Martial Arts world as grumblings about the use of leg locks began to arise.

Exercise of the Week – November 1st, 2010

Fitness is an important part of mixed martial arts. Whether you are training to fight or just for health reasons, you need to work your total body in order to survive the intense training sessions. Once a week, MMA Zone will cover an exercise that you should incorporate into your workout plan. For the week of November 1, 2010, we will cover the squat exercise.
