Here are a few news tidbits that have floated throughout the mixed martial arts world at the midway point of this week:
McKenzie steps in to face Edwards
With Melvin Guillard stepping in to face Evan Dunham for the injured Kenny Florian, that left Yves Edwards, who was Guillard’s original match up without an opponent to face. That problem was solved as The Ultimate Fighter season 12 alumni Cody McKenzie took the spot. Fresh off his Submission of the Night victory over Aaron Wilkinson at the Ultimate Finale, McKenzie will look to keep his winning ways going against the MMA veteran. This fight will take place at UFC: Fight for the Troops 2, which will be held at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas.
Diaz looks towards next opponent
Since current talks to get Strikeforce’s welterweight champion, Nick Diaz, in the cage against Jason “Mayhem” Miller have stalled, Diaz and his camp are looking to other options. According to multiple news outlets, the main issue between the two groups is what weight the two competitors would face each other. Diaz’s trainer/manager Cesar Gracie has stated that they want the fight to take place at 180 pounds, while Miller argues for the 183 pound weight limit. The Diaz and Miller saga first began during the incident in Nashville in which Miller interrupted Diaz’s teammate, Jake Shields, during his post fight interview. The resulting brawl was seen on live television. This past October the fighters almost came to blows again after Diaz had defeated K.J. Noons.
With the Miller fight currently off the table, Gracie almost mentioned a fight with Paul Daley. Daley is coming off a stunning first round knockout of Scott Smith. Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker liked the idea saying “Daley’s name was brought up. I think that would be an amazing fight myself because styles make fights, and those two styles would be explosive.” However Coker also stated that the Miller situation would have to be fully explored before anything else was done.
Josh Thomson will face Tatsuya Kawajiri at DREAM Dynamite!!
Another Strikeforce versus DREAM matchup has been created. Former lightweight title contender Josh Thomson will fight former Dynamite title contender Tatsuya Kawajiri. This fight comes on the heels of the last Strikeforce versus Dream event in which Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez firmly dominated Dream lightweight champion Shinya Aoki. This matchup is set to take place in Japan during a DREAM event.
