The Ultimate Fighting Championship has released information about five fights that have been added to the UFC 126: Silva versus Belfort card. The event is scheduled to occur on February 5th which coincides with the UFC’s effort to host an event during Super Bowl weekend. This year’s show will take place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The biggest matchup announced was the showdown between Team Alpha Male prospect Chad Mendes and Michihiro Omigawa. The undefeated Mendes (9-0) will debut in the UFC after his WEC home has merged with the larger organization. Since his debut in 2008 Mendes has displayed an ever improving skill set, with wins over Cub Swanson, Erik Koch and Javier Vazquez to anchor his resume.
Omigawa returns to the UFC after a previous stint that saw him go 0-2. After his release he continued to struggle even after returning to Japan until 2009. Since then he has rattled off five wins which include three first round stoppages. His fighting resume includes victories over Nam Phan, Micah Miller and Cole Escovedo.
Another Japanese star will perform during UFC 126 as Norifumi “Kid” Yamato will face Demetrious Johnson. Yamato brings an 18-3 record with him to the Octagon and this includes 13 stoppages by either knockout or technical knockout. While he suffered two losses in 2009, his record has been stellar going back to 2002.
“Mighty Mouse” Johnson is another fighter who has been brought over from the WEC merger. He suffered his only career loss during his WEC debut to Brad Pickett, however he’s rebounded well with two victories to finish out 2010.
Welterweights Jake Ellenberger and Carlos Rocha have been added to the main card. Ellenberger has racked up a 2-1 record in the UFC which includes victories over John Howard and Mike Pyle. He was defeated in his UFC debut by title contender Carlos Condit. Rocha continued his undefeated streak during his debut at UFC 122 where he defeated Kris McCray with a kneebar submission. The BJJ specialist holds a 9-0 record.
Additional fights added to the preliminary card include: Gabe Ruediger versus Paul Taylor and Mike Pierce versus Kenny Robertson.
