Planning big matchups in the immediate future has never been a problem for the Ultimate Fighting Championship organizers. UFC 130 is proof of that. This event, which hasn’t been officially announced by the UFC, is expected to be laced with many fights that can shake up the rankings of various weight classes.
Currently, the rumored main event may include the third matchup between current UFC lightweight champion, Frankie Edgar and the only man to defeat him, Gray Maynard. At the first MMA event of the year, these two fighters put on a show that people will be talking about all year. Maynard nearly decimated the champion in the first five minutes; however, Edgar displayed a level of heart that few people can ever attain. He was able to battle back during the next 20 minutes and forces the judges to award a split draw. UFC President then awarded an immediate rematch to Maynard.
To go along with this fight, a light heavyweight matchup between Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Thiago Silva has been rumored for the event. Jackson is coming off of a victory against Lyoto Machida at UFC 123. The former champion was able to press the action enough to walk away with a split decision victory.
Silva will walk into the cage after a very impressive performance against Brandon Vera at UFC 125. Silva controlled the fight on numerous levels, even badly breaking Vera’s nose early in the first round. The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt has only been defeated twice during his six year professional MMA career.
A big name heavyweight tilt is planned for UFC 130 as well. Former champion Frank Mir will face off against The Ultimate Fighter season 10 winner Roy Nelson. Mir defeated MMA legend Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic at UFC 119 and holds wins over Brock Lesnar, Chieck Kongo, and Antonio Rodrigo Nigeria.
Nelson was defeated during his last outing but current number one contender Junior dos Santos at UFC 117 in August. Before that he was on a two fight win streak that saw him decimate both Stefan Struve and Brendan Schaub within the first round of action. Nelson is also a former IFL heavyweight champion.
Welterweight contender Thiago Alves is rumored to be facing off against new rival Rick Story during UFC 130. After his victory at UFC The Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale, Story called out Alves, saying that he (Alves) would be a good matchup for him. Story has won five straight matches since his UFC debut back in June of 2009.
Alves looked like his former self as he halted a two fight losing streak at UFC 124 with a unanimous decision victory over John Howard. Alves looked fresher after making weight without the troubles that has plagued him before. His improved striking and wrestling allowed him to control the complete fight against Howard.
Heavyweight prospects Stefan Struve and Travis Browne are also expected to face each other on the UFC 130 card.
