With an ending so controversial that fans began to spew curses and boos while Joe Rogan went on an attack based rant against MMA judging; the UFC had almost no choice but to set up a rematch with Leonard Garcia and Nam Phan.
Set to take place on March 26 at UFC Fight Night 24, Garcia and Phan will once again lock horns. This match was first reported by MMAWeekly.com and has since been confirmed by multiple outlets.
The duo first met on December 4th at the Ultimate Fighter season 12 Finale. In that bout the fighters went at each other for the full three rounds. An action packed battle that saw Garcia push the pace, as he normally does, with Phan displaying effective striking of his own.
A look of shock fell over both Garcia’s and Phan’s face when Garcia was announced the winner. Both fighters expressed they believed Phan had won the fight as those in attendance expressed their disdain. UFC President Dana White even went as far as to reward Phan with the fight bonus for that evening. This rematch was made after it was reported that Garcia would not face Diego Nunes due to injury.
Garcia is well known for his aggressive style in the cage. Often a fan favorite for going all out every time he fights, Garcia has notable victories over Jens Pulver, Hiroyuki Takaya and Chan Sung Jung.
With a black belt in both Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Karate, Phan has competed in MMA for nine years before taking part on the most recent season of the Ultimate Fighter. During the show he was the last surviving member of Team Koscheck, although he eventually lost to Michael Johnson in the semifinals. Phan has experience competing in King of the Cage, Sengoku and other major MMA organizations.
