We are a little more than two weeks into the New Year and the mixed martial arts community already has a lot to look forward to in this year. With one major show that had a main event worth the money in the books, we can all only hope that the year gets better as each day passes for fight fans. Here is a look at some of the biggest stories to jump start this year.
Strikeforce announced a heavyweight Grand Prix that will feature some of the biggest names in the division for big men. Fedor Emelianenko, Antonio Silva, Fabricio Werdum, Brett Rodgers, Josh Barnett, Andrei Arlovski and Alistair Overeem are a few of the names to be featured in this event. While details are finally coming out, the event has already garnered a mass of media attention from the MMA community. With so many potential matchups available, MMA fans can finally see the fights they have pined for. The tournament will begin on February 12 at Fedor vs. Silva which is set to be held in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
To counter the announcement, the Ultimate Fighting Championship has released the names of the two coaches for the 13 season of The Ultimate Fighter. Heavyweights Brock Lesnar and Junior dos Santos will lead teams of welterweights into the UFC house and towards a potential UFC contract. Once the show is over, the two coaches will fight at an UFC event for the right to face the recuperating heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez. Filming is set to begin at the end of January.
Not to be forgotten, Bellator Fighting Championships also had a major announcement within their own promotion. Towards the end of 2010, the company revealed a television deal with MTV2. This came right in time as the organization began to put together their fourth “season” tournament. This series will feature welterweights competing for the chance to face current champion Ben Askern. The tournament will feature a number of prospects in the weight class such as former champion Lyman Good, Dan Hornbuckle, Rick Hawn, Steve Carl, Jay Hieron, Jim Walhead, Chris Lozano, and Brent Weedman. A tournament start date has yet to be announced, however potential plans are pointing towards March.
As the year progresses, the MMA world can expect many more surprise announcements and great fights.
