Big, exciting cards seems to be the theme for the Ultimate Fighting Championship this year as they have provided a number of interesting matchups early throughout 2011. With a very stacked card this weekend, the organization looks to improve each night out. UFC 130 is shaping up to be another night of very exciting matches.
Set to take place on May 28th in the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, five bouts are now official for the card.
The main event is to be a lightweight title rematch between Gray Maynard and Frankie Edgar. After the show these two fighters put on to start the year, the rematch was a must-make. This will be the third meeting between the two fighters. Additional matches made for the UFC 130 include Quinton “Rampage” Jackson versus Thiago Silva in a fight that is very important to the light heavyweight rankings. Heavyweights Frank Mir and Roy Nelson will also fight it out during the event. Welterweight contender Thiago Alves will face rising star Rick Story. MMA icon Wanderlei Silva will face off against former US Marine Brian Stann.
Edgar and Maynard will be completing the trilogy series in their exciting rivalry. Maynard is the only fighter to ever defeat the current champion and he did so in 2008. He looked to have the title won early this year, however Edgar showed the heart of a champion and fought back to force a five-round draw. With a combined record of 23-1, Edgar and Maynard are at the top of the lightweight class in MMA.
As a former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, Jackson is looking to place himself back into the number-one contenders spot. His last outing saw him win a controversial decision over Lyoto Machida. The former PRIDE veteran wanted to stay active instead of waiting a title shot, so he has taken a fight against a very game Thiago Silva. Silva looked very dominant in his victory over Brandon Vera. This fight was his first in more than a year as he was sidelined due to a back injury.
Former UFC Heavyweight Champion, Frank Mir wants to keep his winning ways going into 2011. During his last fight he looked very sluggish before using a quick knee to knock out Mirko Filipovic this past September. Nelson is the winner of the tenth season of “The Ultimate Fighter” and has become a fan favorite ever since. With two quick knockouts of Brandon Schaub and Stefan Struve, he was on his way towards a title shot until being defeated by Junior dos Santos. Nelson then had to fight through contract issues with a boxing promotion, but now that is behind him and he is ready to get back into the UFC cage.
At UFC 124 in December, Thiago Alves looked like he was back to his wrecking machine self as he tore through John Howard. With snapping leg kicks and takedowns the former contender stopped a two fight losing streak. Rick Story on the other hand, looks to push his winning streak to six with a win over Alves. The powerful wrestler lost his UFC debut but has since gone on to win five fights in a row, including a unanimous decision victory over the tough Johny Hendricks.
The UFC has not been very pleasant for PRIDE legend Wanderlei Silva. Since his first fight in 2007, the former champion has only gone 2-3 in the organization. An injury sidelined him after a decision victory over Michael Bisping and this will be his first action in over a year. With a 4-2 record in the UFC, Brian Stann has looked more impressive since his drop down to middleweight. In January he became only the second person to ever stop the hard hitting Chris Leben. His resume includes wins over Rodney Wallace and Steve Cantwell.
UFC 130 will be another exciting event as the Ultimate Fighting Championship continues to one-up themselves on a monthly basis.
