MMA is a growing community and as with any growing community, news stories are occurring every day. Here are a few news bites from early in the second week of February.
Griffin, Belfort top list of UFC 126 Payouts
Vitor Belfort and Forrest Griffin both walked away with $275,000 for their performances at UFC 126 this past Saturday. Champion Anderson Silva was rewarded $200,000 for his first round knockout title defense. His salary was also bolstered by PPV shares and other funding, but that information was not released. Jon Jones also topped the six figure mark, making $140,000 for his second round submission victory over Ryan Bader.
Bellator adds to Lightweight Tournament
Former Division 1 wrestler, Michael Chandler, has been added to Bellator’s season 4 lightweight tournament. The All-American award winner while at the University of Missouri made his mixed martial arts debut in 2008. Since then he has gained a 5-0 record which includes two wins in Strikeforce events and one victory in Bellator last October. All five of those victories have come by finish; three technical knockouts and two submission victories.
Confirmed fighters in the tournament include former WEC Lightweight Champion “Razor” Rob McCullough and Carey Vanier. A number of unconfirmed participants have been leaked but Bellator has yet to make an official announcement about their involvement. The season is set to begin at Bellator Fighting Championships 35 on March 5th.
Strikeforce Announces Matchups for “Feijao versus Henderson”
Strikeforce has begun to announce matches for the March 5th event in Columbus, Ohio. Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante will defend his Light Heavyweight Title against Dan Henderson. Along with this main event, Marloes Coenen will defend her title against number one contender Miesha Tate. Tim Kennedy will face off against the returning Melvin Manhoef. Jorge Gurgel will fight Tyler Combs and Billy Evangelista will fight Jorge Masvidal.
