Turning down a title shot is something that many fighters believe they would not do, however former Light Heavyweight Champion, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson did just that. He confirmed the rumors today through his official Twitter account with the following statement:
“I turned down the fight cause of short notice; I would have to lose 45 pounds in four weeks. You would have to be a fighter to understand, life goes on.”
With the injury to Rashad Evans threatening the title matchup for UFC 128, match making officials opened the option up to Jackson to take the fight, in which he turned down. After that, the matchup was offered to rising star Jon Jones after he had defeated Ryan Bader at UFC 126 this past weekend. Jones immediately jumped on the opportunity.
Once it was released that Jackson had declined to take the fight on short notice, backlash began to flow from different directions; thus provoking the statement from “Rampage” through his Twitter account.
“Rampage” Jackson is set to face Brazilian Jiu Jitsu specialist Thiago Silva in May at UFC 130.
