Training With or Without the Jiu Jitsu Gi

Jiu Jitsu Gi or not to Jiu Jitsu Gi? Is the question..

A simple action like removing a Jiu Jitsu Gi can change the game easily. When it comes to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu the act of taking off the gi completely changes the aspect of training injiu jitsu the martial art. No gi competitions are a major aspect in the grappling arts today. When signing up for any competition you may see the option of participating with or without the Jiu Jitsu Gi. Both realms of the martial art are important for bringing your game full circle.

When you first begin your training, many academies will require you to begin your training in the traditional Jiu Jitsu Gi. It is during this time that you will learn the foundations of BJJ and the submission wrestling game. After you have gained substantial experience, you have the option of venturing into the no gi aspect of the martial arts. Other academies also allow you to begin training without the gi earlier in your instruction. The question of which is better often arises, but in my opinion shouldn’t even be asked.

Training with the gi and without it goes hand in hand when working to develop your martial arts abilities. Proper technique is needed to push your training to the highest levels and to do that you must step outside of your comfort zone. In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu that means working with or without the gi. Both styles will bring an added bonus to your overall game.

For example, working without the Jiu Jitsu Gi during your training will help you become accustomed to not having them present. When you transition back to your gi training, this experience will make your overall game much better because you will not have to rely on the availability of those grips. As your technique in one discipline improves, it will have a positive influence on your other disciplines.

Instead of asking if it would be better for you train with or without your Jiu Jitsu Gi, do both. As you become stronger in one style of grappling, you will become stronger in the other. That should always be your overall goal; becoming better every step of the way with or without a Jiu Jitsu Gi.
