Intermediate ground and pound workout Integrate this workout into your training program to improve technique and increase your cardio.

MMA Training Tips
Workout Purpose: This workout emphasizes guard passing techniques and ground-and-pound from dominate mount positions. As you work the drills, first throw soft strikes as the guy on bottom plays dummy. It is just a drill, so the guy on bottom should not resist, but should use his hands to cover his face and body from attack. Take turns and switch positions. While training in your partner’s guard, make sure to throw a variation of strikes—just mark the strikes, don’t actually beat your partner.

To begin in mixed martial arts and make it to the elite level of the UFC a fighter must posses a good deal of strength. This strength and
power will help you out in several areas: throwing punches, on the ground, and in the clinch. Strength and conditioning specifically for MMA must be done through training you functional strength. This is not the same workout routine that a bodybuilder would use in the gym to grow their muscles. Functional strength is what some commonly refer to as ‘farm boy strength’. It is that strength that can’t be created on the bench press, in the squat rack, or doing tons of curls.
A lot of the functional strength comes for the core muscles along with a strong sense of balance. Aside for pure functional strength when someone has the ability to utilize leverage they can increase their strength 10 fold in the eyes of their opponents. A lot of wrestlers learn to use their body weight and angles while they are young and that is why you see a lot of them at the top of the UFC food chain. They have the ability to use leverage to add power or pressure to their opponents thus giving them the advantage while saving their energy for the stand up or clinch.

The current explosion of MMA has motivated many people to consider their newly found curiosity and take it one stage further. Increasing numbers of people are signing themselves up to learn the fighting techniques of MMA and the MMA gyms can’t pop up
fast enough for the demand that is there.
Nearly all these MMA gyms offer classes in Boxing, Kick Boxing, Taekwondo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Submission Wrestling (among other martial art disciplines). A lot (not every) of those gyms neglect the sport-specific strength and conditioning classes – so afterwards you need to make sure you cover this area on your own.

Due to the incredible success Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has had in the ring and octagon in big MMA and UFC events it popularity has
just sky rocketed. However, many people don’t understand that although MMA is real fighting there are a lot of moves and types of techniques that are banned or illegal which can’t be brought into the ring or octagon and even though these moves can’t be used in a sanctioned MMA even they are still worth practicing and working on as a self defense.
One such instance is actually the use of the Jiu Jitsu Gi in general, along with BJJ Gi chokes in particular. A lot of people believe the fact that no-gi grappling is just “even more effective” simply because folks don’t wear gi’s in everyday life, and MMA fighters don’t wear them in the octagon. So, they believe since the real world doesn’t have gi’s then no-gi grappling must be more effective and this can’t be further from the truth. Although we don’t wear a gi in normal everyday situations people do were lose shirts, jackets, vests, etc.
