Martial Arts Training Without any Gear or Equipment

Posted on 27 February 2013 by Dean Nielsen

Can you become a skilled, strong, effective martial artist without all the weight lifting training, and other “strength building” equipment? Can you defeat an opponent who uses all the latest and greatest MMA equipment on a regular basis? And what if you cannot afford such equipment, or join a gym offering such equipment?

Combat Sports vs. Military Combat Training

Posted on 25 February 2013 by Dean Nielsen

Martial arts & self defense training in the Armed Forces has been a critical skill taught to every soldier that began basic training.  Although there is a huge following of MMA within the military combat sports aren’t necessarily how they train.  Since combat sports has rules and regulations this type of training isn’t as beneficial when it comes to self defense and one might think.  The military values functional movements that work quickly and effectively to hurt and even kill their combatant.  So, are their comparisons between military martial arts training and today’s MMA training?

UFC 156: The Superfight

Posted on 18 February 2013 by Tony Hackerott

By Jordan Minns

UFC_156_PosterNowadays, there is no shortage of fights. Last year, the UfC held hundreds of fights and if you add non UFC fights, it would total in the thousands. Even title fights aren’t so rare anymore, UFC title fights can be seen almost once a month. But there’s a type of fight that does not come so often, fans call for it, promoters try to make it, but rarely are they successful. These fights are super fights, and recently I had the honor to witness one, LIVE. The fight was UFC 156 Aldo (near undefeated featherweight champion & p4p great) vs Edgar (former lightweight champion who some would say still is, referred to as the number p4p fighter in the world by Dana White). Along with the super fight, they had a super card that I’m happy to break down for you.

So, Your A Black Belt, Big Deal…

Posted on 14 February 2013 by Tony Hackerott

What happened to the good old days when someone was a black belt they were respected and/or feared.  It didn’t matter if they were a black belt in Kung Fu, Karate, Taekwondo, or any-other-fu style.  Now with the explosion of MMA the only 3 or 4 that seem to matter are JiuJitsu, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, and Wrestling since that is typically the skills of most top mixed martial arts fighters.  However, other styles still have their reason for existing.  Other styles like Taekwondo, Karate, or Judo are still very important and effective as a self-defense even though they are not in the MMA mix.

Using The Spinning Heel Kick To Perfection

Posted on 07 February 2013 by Tony Hackerott

A few weeks ago Evan Geis wrote a fantastic article on the Taekwondo Tornado Kick. Another great kick that MMA has adopted from the Taekwondo style that you don’t see often is the spinning heel kick also known as the reverse roundhouse kick.

When pondering over Tae Kwon Do and the UFC one name pops out. That fighter is no other then Anthony “Showtime” Pettis. Pettis is based in Tae Kwon Do. This is not only rare in the UFC but, makes his kicks volatile. Pettis is known primarily for three kicks. Those are his rib smashing roundhouse kick, hid hidden over the top roundhouse, and of course his famed Showtime kick. Let’s take a deeper look into this kicking superstar.Anthony Pettis & Taekwondo
