Not only have taser guns become one of the US police forces favorite and most commonly used
(but highly controversial) weapons in their arsenal but are also used by criminals in the street. Taser guns have been touted as a non-lethal tool used to easily subdue an attacker, but have received much negative press after several deaths involving police use of tasers on the public. Tasers provide easy take downs by overriding the central nervous system sending the victim to the floor in record speed.

Ground fighting styles may have taken over as the leading styles for most MMA battles these days. Besides the fact that this is extremely disappointing for those who love real stand up, knock ‘em out action, these styles are surely pretty useless when it comes to most real life situations. Even if you did decide it was a good idea to tackle someone to the ground on concrete and try to submit them, any real attacker isn’t likely to submit and they certainly won’t be following any UFC rules that’s for sure. That’s if you can actually take them down before you get stabbed or take a bottle to the head.

Winning in a fight whether it is in the octagon, in your Taekwondo, Karate, Judo or Kung Fu martial arts school or in the street is always an incredible feeling. However there are some knock downs and K.O.s that are just so much more impressive than others. Now just imagine taking down an opponent with a slap! If you picture it now, surely you can imagine the jokes every time the fight is talked about for the next ten years and it will certainly earn you a pretty sweet reputation.

The kubaton was originally invented by Takayuki Kubota. The kubaton is a small rod often made of metal or hard plastic that is about the size of a marker and can be attached to a keyring. This martial arts weapon has been used by law enforcement like the LAPD and civilians for self-defense alike. The kubaton is similar to the pasak of Filipino martial arts, or the yawara stick of the Japanese martial art yawarajutsu.

Unlike martial arts weapons like the bo staff, sword, or nunchaku weapons of opportunity are everyday objects that we take for granted which can be used as weapons. You need to be aware of what can be used as a ‘weapon of opportunity’ both to defend yourself against an attack, if you are attacked as well as being able to foresee and prevent situations that may turn into an armed attack against you. If you are traveling or in a potentially dangerous place you may want to make sure some of these potential weapons are out of an aggressors reach and perhaps within yours.

The second smallest continent in the world, Europe contains a largely wealthy and extremely diverse community of cultures. In most peoples’ minds, it is probably not a continent particularly associated with indigenous martial arts. However, Europe has a long and fascinating martial arts history. As power-bases among civilizations came and went—often as a result of violent conflict and large-scale warfare—martial arts developed as a response to the environment in which warriors found themselves.
