Is Ronda Rousey The Future Face Of Womens MMA?

Posted on 18 November 2011 by Last Ronin

By Last Ronin

“Rowdy” Ronda Rousey is starting to make a name for herself in the womens MMA scene.  She is already 3-0, winning all of her fights via armbar AND not one of her fights has made it past the first minute of the first round.  If that isn’t impressive then I don’t know what is.  Her next fight will be on November 18th at the Strikeforce Challengers event where she will take on Muay Thai fighter, Julia Budd, who has a record of 2-1.  This should be a good match up as it pits Rousey against one of the better strikers she has faced in her career.

A win on Friday night will put Ronda one step closer to a title shot in the Women’s Featherweight Division, however she has already stated that if she wins then she plans on dropping down to the 135 division to take on the champion, Miesha Tate, who apparently called her out on Twitter.  One has to wonder if Ronda is making this move because she is ducking a future fight with the current featherweight champion Cyborg.  A win against Budd would make her a serious title contender and most likely Cyborg’s next opponent (if Cyborg beats Hiroko Yamanaka).  Strikeforce is having a hard enough time finding people who will even step into the cage with Cyborg– hence her almost year-long absence.

The Challenges Women MMA Fighters Face

When former professional Philadelphia boxer Jacqui Frazier (Joe’s daughter) used to train for upcoming fights she had to concern herself with three children, a husband and her law firm. Unlike males fighters, women who train for sporting events where they compete must still contend with all these other “womanly” duties. Like Frazier, who is now retired from boxing and has traded in her gloves for a judge’s robe in Philadelphia courts, most people don’t realize exactly what goes into the life of a female MMA fighter.

First, a little back story on the history of the UFC: Rorion Gracie, son of Helio, partnered with Art Davie, a salesman who had television connections and Bob Meyrowitz, who was president of Semaphore Entertainment Group (SEG). Together, the three men established the “Ultimate Fighting Championship,” or UFC, as it’s referred to, which held its first pay-per-view event in 1993.

Can Women Really Be Part Of The MMA Game?

Posted on 18 July 2010 by Tony Thacker

The UFC and explosion of the popularity of MMA gear has not just been among men. Women have gotten into watching the UFC battles just as much as anyone else. In fact many have been inspired to get into the ring themselves and if not compete professionally at least take up various forms of fighting arts as a hobby or form of self-defense and keeping fit. It may be surprising to many that a lot of women have chosen ground fighting or grappling as their art of choice instead of traditional stand up fighting forms, however there are many reasons that this is beneficial.

Without being sexist, in most real life situations when a woman has to defend herself from a man, her odds are probably a lot better using submission fighting techniques that standing up and slugging it out. Using joint locks to submit or break and opponents limbs does not require a great amount of strength, just as with chokes. So as a form of self-defense ground fighting is a great choice for women.
