Combat Sports vs. Military Combat Training

Martial arts & self defense training in the Armed Forces has been a critical skill taught to every soldier that began basic training.  Although there is a huge following of MMA within the military combat sports aren’t necessarily how they train.  Since combat sports has rules and regulations this type of training isn’t as beneficial when it comes to self defense and one might think.  The military values functional movements that work quickly and effectively to hurt and even kill their combatant.  So, are their comparisons between military martial arts training and today’s MMA training?

First, a little back story on the history of the UFC: Rorion Gracie, son of Helio, partnered with Art Davie, a salesman who had television connections and Bob Meyrowitz, who was president of Semaphore Entertainment Group (SEG). Together, the three men established the “Ultimate Fighting Championship,” or UFC, as it’s referred to, which held its first pay-per-view event in 1993.

An Idea for Tournaments in the UFC

The playoff format is used to determine championships in many different sports leagues. The teams that have performed best throughout the season play each in a series of games for the right to declare themselves the league champion. Recently, I’ve begun asking myself how this format would fair if it was embraced by the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The idea does seem intriguing.
