These Ninja Stealth Guidelines are taken from Stephen K. Hays in his book “The Mystic Arts of the Ninja.

Guidelines to Ninja Stealth

Guidelines to Ninja Stealth

  1. Flex your knees and allow your weight to sink while maintaining a controlled balance. Always carry the least amount of ninja weapons you will need.
  2. Make sure to breath while you move. Many people hold their breath and this actually produce excess muscle tension, and this may also lead to a loud gasp when a breath is taken or needed.
  3. You must watch where you are walking but don’t only focus on that you must be aware of your surroundings and notice other people or obstacles are coming up.
  4. You must use all your joints for ninja stealth, move like flowing water and engage your ankles, knees and hips for stepping. Do not swing your entire leg from your hip this will certainly increase the noise you make.
  5. This is critical, keep all your weight and balance on your leg that is grounded. Avoid distributing your weight over both legs.
  6. Let one of your hands ‘float’ in front of you and the other beside you one torso high and one torso low. This will help in detecting possible barriers before your full body weight commits to them.
  7. If you feel you have made to loud of a noise stop for a moment for signs of detection. This will be a quick movement made by others and/or immediate silence following your sound. The good thing is that immediate silence is a guess that a listener heard something they have not detected you. As you are stopped slowly sink lower on your knees to physically relax. Once on your knees take a deep breathe and release it slowly to help relax. Remain this way until you are confident to proceed and give enough time for listeners decide they didn’t hear anything at all.
  8. You must remain calm and patient in this skill. You should actually focus on taking as much time as you safely can.
  9. The Ninja always understands the environment. For example if it is rough terrain you must take smaller steps so that you keep in control of your balance and one last tip If at all possible crawl for concealment.

Many of the weapons used by the ninja were derived from their need for stealth and speed. Although they did use traditional weapons, such as swords and daggers, the ninja also employed an arsenal of other devices designed to stun, delay, distract, and—of course—to kill their enemies. They were masters in the use of gunpowder, which they utilized to create smoke screens, burning projectiles, and even landmines. Many of their weapons had multiple uses and were easily concealed. For example, the throwing star also known as the “shuriken” (small, handheld blades) were usually thrown at the enemy to cause minor injuries and create a distraction, but they could also be used in the hand, to gouge and slash.

Ninja clothing was designed for camouflage, with dark colors worn at night, and white worn to blend in with snow. They devised many ingenious ways in which to go about their business undetected. Shaped wooden blocks attached to their shoes imitated the tracks of wild animals, while metal claws strapped to their hands and feet enabled them to climb more easily.

SHINOBI SHOZOKO

When dressed in the “shinobi shozoko”-the ninja uniform that we most commonly associate with the ninja—almost all the ninja’s flesh, except for an area around the eyes and the hands, is completely covered. However, it is likely that some ninja would have worn peasant clothing.

MANRIKIGUSARI/KUSARIFUNDO

Consisting of a long piece of chain with at each end, a “manrikigusari” (sometimes known as a “kasarifundo”) was used to disable or to kill outright. The chain was held in the hand and ninja would throw one weigh into the enemy’s face, groin, or solar plexus

KUSARIGAMA

The chain and blade, or “kusarigama” was used to entangle the enemy or his weapon, making it possible to draw him in and stab him. The weighted end of the chain was swung over the user’s head, and then whipped forward. Sometimes the weight itself acted as a lethal weapon.

TABI BOOTS

In common with traditional footwear of the time, the ninja’s “tabi” boots had a split toe to improve grip

BO SHURIKEN
Usually sharpened at one end-sometimes both—”bo shuriken” could be thrown in a number of ways: underarm, overarm, sideways, or backward; and with or without spin.

SPIKED SHURIKEN

There are a variety of different small, spiked shuriken, which have sharpened points projecting out on all sides from a central ring.

HARIGATA SHURIKEN
The name of this type of shuriken means “needle-shaped.”lt is thought that they derive from the thick needles that were used to stitch leather armor.

KAKUTE

These spiked or bladed rings were favored by female ninja. Sometimes the tips were dipped in poison so the ninja could strangle an enemy while delivering a dose of poison. Alternatively, they could be used to gouge and slash.

TETSUBISHI

Small, spiked devices, known as “tetsubishi” were used to aid escape. They would b scattered onto the ground to slow down an enemy in pursuit.

KAGINAWA

These hook-ropes, known as “kaginawa,” were used primarily as restraining devices. They consist of a hook attached to the end of a long rope with iron rings. Sometimes spiked rings, or “kakute” were used, to make struggling more painful. Kaginawa could also be used for scaling walls, or swinging from roof to roof, or tree to tree.

Ninjas are well know for many things and one of these is a mystical mental power that eclipses the average person. As important as the weapons of the ninja was their mental acuity inside a mission. This type of hand signals for focused mental energy was started by the Budists.

The Kuji-in was performed before missions to help visualize a success full completion and bring about the powers that are need to do this. Below we have listed some of the Kuji-in signs performed by the hands. There are 81 total hand symbols but with 9 primary ones:

The Perfect Ninja Weapon.

Ninja were highly trained warriors of feudal Japan. Ninjas executed covert and dangerous missions, such as assassinations and espionage. They were well-known for their precision, skill, and use of weapons. Ninja weapons were typically weapons that would be easily carried and concealed, allowing the ninja to stealthily target and attack an opponenet.

Real Ninja Nunchakus

Real Ninja Nunchakus

A popular weapon for participants of ninja training today is the nunchaku. Ninja nunchaku are two sticks connected by a rope or chain. It is possible that the first nunchaku were used in the rice and soybean fields of ancient Asia. Used as a thresher, the nunchaku could have been used to separate the grain and husk of rice and soybeans. The original nunchaku and those used in later years as weapons were made of wood, and the two sticks were connected by a horse hair rope. The wooden sticks were covered in mud for several years. This hardened the wood and prevented the wood from rotting.

Today, ninja nunchaku are made from a variety of materials, including wood, metal, fiberglass and plastic. The connecting cord is can be made of nylon, rope, or a metal chain. The sticks of these ninja weapons can have a cross-section that is round or octagonal. The octagonal-shaped sticks can cause greater injury to an opponent than the round-shaped sticks. Both sticks are usually of the same length.

Ninja nunchaku need to be the proper length for the user. The nunchaku sticks should be the length of the user’s forearm. When the cord of the nunchaku is laid across the palm of the user’s hand, the two sticks should hang comfortably from the hand and be in a position that is perpendicular to the floor. It is essential that these ninja weapons are balanced. The cheaper ninja nunchaku that are available today may not be properly balanced. Precise balance of the ninja nunchuka allows the user to perform more fluid moves. Advanced nunchuka movements are not possible with improperly balanced nunchuka.

Ninjas were known to employ fighting techniques that allowed them to be within a close range of the opponent. Ninja nunchuka can be concealed by the user and then quickly taken out and used for the attack. The average length of nunchuka is twelve inches. Mini nunchuka, or mini chucks, are about eight inches in length and be concealed more easily than the typical nunchuka. Both the twelve inch ninja nunchuka and the mini chucks can be used to strike an opponent from many different angles.
