In this day and age where sport style Tae Kwon Do is so prolific, it may surprise many to learn that there is a whole world of Tae Kwon Do which at its core believes in the principal of strong blocks and a single strike so powerful that a fight would ideally end in one blow. No man was a greater champion for this approach to Tae Kwon Do than Grandmaster Duk Sung Son. Grandmaster Son passed away a year ago this week and as a former student, I feel a responsibility to share his unique contributions to the art of Tae Kwon Do with the broader Martial Arts community.

One thing that the martial arts of Tae kwon do is known for is their Ariel and powerful kicks! From the low sweeps to the aerial flying side kick they are all enjoyable to watch and even better when you can see them in a match, fight, or while sparring. We realize that other martial art disciplines have similar style kicks with various names but Taekwondo and is known for it’s powerful kicks.
