Nowadays, there are variety of sword kata’s that are comprised of bladed weapons like katana – ninja swords, saber, knife and samurai swords. Training with swords can certainly help you improve your physical and emotional discipline. Besides, there are several sword training routines which can help you increase your concentration and mental abilities. Sword fighting methods are classified into two, the single handed and double handed.

What is the best type of sword?

Martial artists and warriors have argued this debate for decades – ‘what is the best type of sword?

Throughout history many types and styles of swords have been developed and mastered by different cultures. Many of the differing types and lengths of swords were developed out of necessity as armor and defenses changed.

Other swords in the martial arts as well as ninja swords were born due to the types of materials and metals that were available and the restrictions those materials presented. Though one thing is for sure, and that is that the sword is definitely the most recognizable and widely used weapon throughout history. Despite the other weapons that warriors have carried and used the sword always held a special and often spiritual value amongst those who used them.

As power-bases among civilizations came and went—often as a result of violent conflict and large-scale warfare—martial arts developed as a response to the environment in which warriors found themselves.

3 Tips When Purchasing a Japanese Sword

There are various styles of Japanese swords available today. Both antique swords as well as modern versions can be purchased depending on your preferences. Some of today’s Japanese swords are manufactured, but the authentic swords are made by a sword-smith.  The various types of Japanese swords are classified by their size and also the manufacturing method.

The Katana is the most common type of Japanese swords and is a long, single-edged sword with a curved blade. Katana’s were used by the Samurai as early as the 1400′s. Samurai’s were Japanese warriors in feudal Japan and were considered to be a nobility military class. The Samurai used a wide variety of weapons, including spears, manrikigusari, and the bow and arrows, but the most common weapons used by the Japanese Samurai was know as the Katana.
